Massage Therapy Modalities
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscles in the body, using heavier pressure to access and assist these muscles. These treatments tend to use more forearms and elbows to achieve the necessary pressure.
Sports massage
Sports massage is best utilized either before or after a sporting event – usually to help prepare a client for an event, or to recover from that event. Generally, it is quicker-paced than traditional Swedish massage to maximize circulation and tends to involve more stretching of muscles as well.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release targets areas within the fascia of the body that is locked up and not moving as freely as they should – this technique can help alleviate issues that have not gotten better with just muscle manipulation.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is used as a base for many massage treatments. It employs the use of long gliding strokes as well as shorter, firmer movements in order to increase circulation and help relax tight muscles. I tend to use it also as a diagnostic tool to feel what is going on within a client’s musculature
Acupressure
Acupressure relies upon Traditional Chinese Medicine that also governs Acupuncture- by working specific channels and points along the body, we can relieve pain and discomfort. Instead of using needles at these points, fingers/knuckles are used to generate a similar response to traditional acupuncture.
Cupping
Cupping can be used as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment method for various issues. By applying suction to the cups, blood is pulled from deep in the muscle closer to the surface of the skin, allowing it to be cycled through the body and re-oxygenated. This helps the affected muscles perform to a higher potential and also helps treat bound-up fascia.
Gua Sha
Gua Sha is also referred to as skin scraping and uses small, flat tools that are rubbed against the skin. This can assist in circulation, lymphatic drainage, and breaking up adhesions (knots) within muscles/fascia.
