What Are the Common Causes of Joint Pain?
Causes of joint pain can be simple or complex. If you go to a typical medical doctor or an orthopedic doctor for such issues, there will usually be an x-ray taken to attempt to diagnose the problem. If no bone abnormalities are present then it is assumed that the patient shouldn’t have any joint pain. Sometimes if the joint space is shrinking the assumption can be made that your articular (joint lining) cartilage is wearing away which can also cause pain in a joint. However, as mentioned before, if the X-ray comes back perfectly clear, there will usually be no good explanation as to why you’re experiencing joint pain.
We know for a fact that anyone can experience joint pain even in the absence of visible structural changes on imaging. Joints are supposed to move freely and cleanly without much restriction. What creates this freedom of movement is the harmonious synchronization of the soft tissue structures that surround the joint. When one structure – be it ligament, tendon, fascia, or muscle becomes stressed due to overuse/underuse, it will throw that system into imbalance which in turn increases stress on a joint. Osteoarthritis or OA, is the kind of arthritis that aging bodies typically experience. We strongly believe that it is preventable with the correct guidance. Some say that it is all genetic and while the patterns which create these imbalances are likely genetic, they are fixable.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Joint Pain
1. Chiropractic offers non-invasive treatment options for joint pain
Who wants to start cutting things open when you can fix them with joint mobilization and some home exercises? The mere act of cutting things open causes scar tissue to form and even many orthopedists will agree.
An open procedure (large scar, no port holes) has less of a tendency to have fascial issues due to the fact that each layer of fascia is sewn up individually. An arthroscopic/laparoscopic procedure looks prettier on the skin with fewer scars, but the carnage that can happen underneath from the puncture wounds can be debilitating.
2. Address underlying issues causing joint pain
This is the basis for our methods. Manipulating the joint may “reset” the bones for a second, a day, or maybe a week, but the joint can only move if the soft tissue structures move it. The core issue, however, returns when the soft tissue structures are not happy and that leads to the joint pain returning. An adjustment alone doesn’t address the entire picture.
3. Long-term solution
It is very possible that with some structural changes, you will likely need a medical procedure at some point, but in the game of life, it is a good goal to stay off the surgeon’s table as LONG as possible. That’s where we come in. We can offer you sound, safe, and effective treatment and as much guidance as possible to continue living life comfortably while maintaining your fitness and or sport.
Joint Pain Treatment Options Offered by Chiropractors at True Sport Care
Joint Manipulation
Joints can be painful when they are fixated or “stuck.” Chiropractic adjustments free these fixations and increase joint range of motion, in many cases immediately. The “congestion” wasn’t allowing for free movement and with a little wrestling and coercion, the hip was freed from the clutches of poor movement. Don’t forget, we just reset the bony structures. Now it is time to reset the soft tissue structures with some good home exercises.
Manual Therapies
Almost never does someone come in simply for an adjustment. Treatments are 30 minutes (which in the chiropractic profession is an eternity for actual Doctor contact time). Adjustments only take about 2 minutes so the rest of the time we are usually doing some analysis, soft tissue work like Graston or ART, and then teaching you how your home exercises are supposed to feel.
Exercise Rehabilitation
It is super important to prevent the recurrence of pain and injury by addressing muscular imbalances. You will not achieve your best results without a specific rehab plan that is customized to your deficiencies. Protocol approaches will sometimes work, but a tailored program like the ones we create in our office will always have a much higher rate of success.
What To Expect
What to Expect During a Visit to a Chiropractor for Joint Pain
First Consultation and Evaluation
During your first consultation, we will pepper you with questions pertaining to your chief complaint. This will be when we start formulating a list of suspected muscles to test.
After finding the culprits, we will then target the issues with our soft tissue arsenal and teach you how to wake up the underused structures via our YouTube channel or App exercises. These are to be done daily so the reprogramming can take place faster. You will actually feel the changes within the first week
Frequency of Appointments
When someone is acute – meaning in a lot of pain – they can be seen multiple times in a week. More typically we schedule patients once per week initially. When we start gaining traction with their issues we start weaning them off from care. We have always said that the less you need us, the better the job we’re doing.
Duration Of Treatment
Every patient we see is paying us good money so we want to fill up the time with helpful treatments that you can’t do on your own. Your 30 or 60-minute appointment will be with the Doctor the entire time. We rarely leave your side so no lollygagging! Prepare to work.
