What is Active Release Technique (ART®)?
Active Release Technique is a manual therapy technique that can target a variety of soft tissues, including fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and even nerves. ART® aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and speed up healing in almost any part of the body. Specific injuries that apply are repetitive strains, adhesions, tissue hypoxia, and joint dysfunction. The technique enhances performance and significantly reduces injury-healing time. During a treatment session, the chiropractor will first identify the abnormal tissue and manually shorten it. Then, the patient will be instructed to perform a movement that maximizes the length of the tissue. Through repetitions and multiple sessions, patients can expect to experience less pain and greater mobility in the area the chiropractor focuses on.
How Does ART® Work?
At the start of a treatment session, the chiropractor feels for ‘adhesions’, or dense collections of scar tissue created when muscles or other tissues sustain damage, are overused, or underused. By first shortening and then lengthening the muscle, the adhesions are broken up, ‘resetting’ the muscle and restoring function. There are over 300 protocols to deal with specific muscles and injuries. The absence of the dense scar tissue also improves blood flow to the targeted area, speeding up the healing process, improving range of motion, and significantly reducing pain.
How Does ART® Differ From Other Forms of Soft Tissue Therapy?
Unlike other forms of treatment, ART® brings the muscle through its full range of motion and neurologically ‘resets’ it, completely restoring function. It combines the pressure applied by the chiropractor with the movement of the patient to treat the adhesion, allowing for tissues to be better targeted and released. Furthermore, ART® can treat a variety of tissues as well, making it an effective treatment option for numerous injuries, and it does not use any drugs or medications, making it a completely natural form of recovery.
Is ART® Painful?
Like many forms of tissue treatment, the patient can expect to feel some discomfort during the treatment, especially when the patient lengthens the muscle and holds the position. However, the discomfort quickly fades once the position is released. This feeling may be frequently experienced during the first few sessions, but as the adhesion is released, the discomfort will gradually subside.
Which Injuries Does ART® Help With?
ART® is effective at treating numerous soft tissue injuries. It is effective for athletes and literally any patient that presents with soft tissues injuries and complains. Some of these common injuries or complaints include, but are not limited to:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Ankle sprains, both acute and chronic
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Shin splints
- Calf or lower leg strains
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Knee pain
- Runner’s knee
- Hip pain
- Back pain
- Shoulder impingements
- Golfer’s/Tennis elbow
- Sciatica
- Neck pain
- Headaches
How Long Does it Take for ART® to Take Effect?
Like all forms of injury treatment, recovery is not immediate when using ART®®. However, patients frequently feel anywhere from forty to fifty percent better after their first session and can expect a complete resolution in six to eight visits.
How can ART® Benefit Patients?
Through the breaking up of the scar tissue, patients can expect to receive a variety of benefits, all of which help restore motion and allow patients to move freely. Not only does ART® alleviate pain and inflammation, but it also improves flexibility and mobility. Another notable benefit is increased healing speed. As the lack of an adhesion allows for greater blood flow to the spot of injury, cells vital to the healing process like platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells can reach the area in greater quantity, increasing the speed of the healing process.
How can ART® Improve Athletic Performance?
Not only does ART® improve patients’ quality of life, but it also improves the performance of athletes or any physically active individuals. Decreased tightness, greater flexibility, and improved mobility significantly reduces the chance of injury and increases the power, speed, and agility of athletes. Furthermore, faster healing will allow all athletes to return to their activity sooner.
